J-109 June 13, 1974 -- four stamps were issued to honor our mineral heritage. These beautiful stamps portray the Amethyst, Rhodochrosite, Tourmaline, and a slice of petrified wood. The painting was taken from an Egyptian fresco from Thebes, C1500 30, depicting a barter scene. The numis is a polished Rhodochrosite, selected from minerals polished at the Jewel Mill in Rowley, Mass., one of the oldest mills in the English colonies (1640). The polished stones take a minimum of 6 months to reach this beautiful gas-like state at the Jewel Mill. A matching block of four stamps is mounted in the reverse of the cover.
