150TH ANNIVERSARY OF MISSOURI STATEHOOD



J-28 May 8, 1971 commemorates the 150th anniversary of Missouri Statehood. The stamp shows the central portion of the Thomas Hart Benton mural "Independence and the Opening of the West." The date selected for the release of the stamp is the 87th birthday of President Harry S. Truman. The painting on the cover is of the covered wagon. The Philadelphia Mint Harry S. Truman medal is the insert. A mint stamp is mounted in the reverse of the cover. A companion Mini-FDC has also been issued with a tiny covered wagon painted on it also. 40 produced. 6 produced with a block of 4 stamps and an elongated Missouri Commemorative cent numis.
