JEFFERSON'S 1972 DESIGN OF THE WHITE HOUSE

J-31 May 10, 1971 issue is the 8 cent Flag-White House Definitive. In 1972 a contest was held for the design of the planned White House. Thomas Jefferson was an entrant, but the design selected was submitted by James Hoban. When Jefferson, as President, moved into the House in 1801, he began to realize some of his own ideas by making a few additions. The subsequently added terrace-pavilions and north and south porticoes are all reminiscent of Jefferson's concepts. The painting on the cover is Jefferson's design. The numis is a BU 1971D Jefferson nickel. A mint stamp is mounted in the reverse of the cover. 30 produced.
